Palabras Útiles (Useful words)
El Camino de Santiago- a pilgrimage route dating back to
Medieval times that traverses Northern Spain; also referred to as “The Way of Saint James,” the Camino ends in the city
of Santiago de Compostela (8,15)
El peregrino- a
pilgrim who walks the Camino de Santiago
El refugio (el
albergue)- a hostel open to pilgrims along the Camino (1, 15, 16)
La credencial- a
small booklet that pilgrims carry to show they have passed through specific
points on the Camino; officials at the
refugios, or sometimes other locations, stamp the pages of the credencial (1, 15)
La compostela- an
official paper that pilgrims receive upon arrival in Santiago de Compostela (1, 15)
La Concha de Santiago-
a seashell with scalloped edges carried by pilgrims along the Camino, it is a
traditional reference to Saint James and the journey along the Camino; representations of the shell can be found
along the Camino, for example on stone pillars, and real ones are located on the
nearby coast (3, 4, 5)
Las flechas amarillas- yellow arrows found on many different surfaces along the Camino which mark the
path toward Santiago de Compostela (6, 7)
